In order to learn Basque from the comfort of your own home, you need to bring the Basque to you.
When I first started dabbling in Basque on my own, it was around 1997. The Internet had been around for a few years. Later in 2011, I had summers off as a teacher and decided to start immersing myself by traveling to study in a Basque intensive school, barnetegui.
Now, I help beginner adults to learn Basque and my key suggestion is to include audio of the Basque language daily. And what was not available back in 1997 is what I can share with you today to actually bring Basque to your home.
As a Basque learner or soon-to-be learner, start adding one of these resources to your daily task list today.
Pick one option from the EiTB site. This website offers many options from live television to 5 different radio stations to reading articles.
I recommend choosing 1 of the 5 radio stations and either downloading the app or bookmarking it on your computer or phone. Plan how much time you’re going to listen and when you’ll do it. For example, 5 minutes nightly while washing your face and brushing your teeth. This will help you hear the natural patterns of the language as you try to capture words you may know. If you’re starting at zero, great do the same thing and listen in to the sounds.
This site is similar to EiTB except it’s based in Iparralde, the northern Basque Country located in France, so you’ll be exposed to different accents.
Follow the same instructions as above. If you have Basque roots from Iparralde I recommend this site for you.
Go into your favorite podcast player and search for Magazine en Euskara by France Bleu Pays Basque or click HERE to go the website that will direct you to the podcast.
This is the 3rd option for on-the-go listening. Download the episodes to your player and listen while in your car or out on a walk.
Now, go ahead and start adding a daily dose of Basque to your day. Any questions you have, go ahead and reach out to me via DMs on Twitter or Instagram.
